Although many feel that the decline in popularity of search engines is due to Bing, the new search engine from Microsoft, it appears that there is more to it then that. In December of 2009, Yahoo was at 22% for customer searches; in January of 2010 it had decreased to 17%. Is this something that Bing can really be responsible for?

For many years Yahoo has been far behind the leading search engine, Google. Although many are aware of this fact, what they are not aware of is that this has more to do with the appearance of their home page, than it does with the actual search results that are produced. The Google and Bing home pages are very simple. And while they do provide their customers with something to look at they are not overwhelming pages for someone to deal with. This could in fact be the reason for Bing’s growing success over the past several months, they have made a very simple homepage, that when held up next to Google, seems to have some very similar characteristics.

The imaginary on the home page is easy and pertains to global issues. There are a few standard links, upon Bing, but they are away to the side and don’t intervene with the search box, or drown the users with what to do. This is a great deal contrary to Yahoo that has links as well as pictures all around causing the site to be a blurring mess. Still while Yahoo admits you to make your personal homepage, everything cab be all the same extremely cluttered up and confusing. This is likewise an error that was constructed by the one time favorite AOL, who had forfeited several of their customers to Google.

Perhaps it is too late for Yahoo, or perhaps simplifying their homepage will help them gain some new business. However you look at it, it does seem that a simpler, more user friendly page does better for a search engine overall.
