Why Many Associate Marketing Endeavours Fall And How You Can Avoid The Same Mistakes: Part One

Getting involved in affiliate marketing is not something to be done on a whim. You will probably have been bombarded by spam emails, tweets and I expect SMS messages too, promising amazing wealthy for working at home on the internet. In fact, it’s become so commonplace that comedians are able to make jokes about them in the knowledge that the crowd will know what they are on about and raising a chuckle. And quite right too, because for the most part, these offers are aimed at getting a few charlies to sign up for a time, have a punt, stick at it for a few months and then stop when they know that they don’t and probably will not ever, make any cash.

However, executed correctly, there is no grounds why with affiliate marketing they wouldn’t have been successful, perhaps not to the extent that sends them dashing off to the Maserati shop with debit card in hand, but enough to put a few extra dollars in the pocket. What they did not comprehend and most likely couldn’t have known (as they will not have been told), was that there is no possibility that anybody was going to find their site, never mind buy anything from the retailers whose links graced the page. The reason for this is that most people with a site they build themselves have little or no knowledge about SEO.

SEO is a method by which a webpage is made conducive to the search engines in order to make it easy for them to be indexed, graded and assessed for significance. This is worked in conjunction with the setting up of the affiliate marketing site by identifying the keywords which describe the site, what it does and what it offers. For instance, if you were to choose your niche marketplace to be a shop for fishing tackle supplies, your keywords may be along the lines of fishing, fishing tackle, fishing rods, fishing reels, fishing line, fish hooks, fishing books, fishing DVDs etc. These keywords then want to be inserted into the description of the site in the HTML header area which isn’t shown on the screen to visitors, but is noticeably to search engines, but they also want to be used in the text written into the page that people do view. This combines the two sections of the pages together and gathers the search engine approval for relevance.

You then sign up to loads of affiliate marketing plans and match as many businesses retailing products in your niche area as you are able. Find the adverts that you like and will look good on your page, and cut and paste the code into your pages, put them into some kind of sensible order such as by country (because you can use affiliate marketing businesses in any territory, not just your own, target markets all over the globe to maximise your chances). Once you are pleased with the appearance then you can begin the search engine optimisation and a great way to start is getting links to your site added on business directories all over the internet. The easiest way to do this is to find a site that will help you add hundreds through them rather than track them all down individually. Be warned though, this is a long and very monotonous process.

Do it though, it is worth it because search engines love links and they want to find directions to your webpages in connection with the relevant keywords so you have to look for ways to do this. Directory listings are a good one and also using social network sites to boost your site with links is another as hopefully, as well as offering links for the search engine robots, humans will see them and hopefully follow as well. These are all good, solid search engine optimisation methods which can be used in the early days of affiliate marketing, the following piece will explain more ways to get your site noticed.
