The Conditions Are Giving Tackle Danglers The Chance To Venture Out And Uncover Fresh Locations

Here we go again with another stay of execution for the country’s maggots which are seemingly being spared a freezing drowning as fishers stay away from the water, even if it is not frozen over. I’ve often wondered what happens at the fishing tackle shop on occasions like these when the growth of bait must start to get critical, as must the odour. Of course nobody is going to get their bait and tackle out unless they are a) insane b) extremely hard or c) trousering huge amounts of money to do so. And besides, even if any of those scenarios were true, the chance of any fish feeding in these conditions is extremely remove.

The snow might mean that instead of going out into the country with bait and tackle, that people put the serious outdoor kit on and pack the camera instead and take advantage of the beautiful scenes as despite the hazards to travel, once you get beyond that it is magnificent out there. Anywhere that has a tree is going to look like it ought to be on a picture postcard. However, there is a disadvantage, because the weight of the snow has caused the buddleia on my drive to break which is very annoying.

I reckon that the only business being done at the fishing tackle shop this week will be for people shopping for gifts for angler pals and relatives so that is probably the best bit of what at any other time of the year would lead to bleak trading indeed. If it was me and it was not Christmas week, I would either be staying at home or donning some sturdy walking shoes, grabbing the camera and my little boy and sallying out into the Black Country hills.

Another advantage of venturing out into the countryside of course is that there is always the likelihood of discovering a new place to dangle the tackle, either a pond or lake that had previously slipped the notice or a branch of a river that could offer a decent day’s sport. We don’t have many rivers in the immediate vicinity near here, though the Severn Valley is not far away, but there are plenty of canals and a trundle down the towpath could be instructive if a spot can be found to take the bait and tackle in more clement times.

We are being informed that this cold snap is unusual but is it? This is what the winter was like when I was a boy, though not normally in the run up to xmas, but it was normal to anticipate it in January and February and these were the months when outings with bait and tackle were out of the question, and with the termination of the season looming anyway, from December to June I would very rarely want to go maggot drowning and find something alternative, preferably warmer, to do instead. And this is what we should be doing; exercise off the fat grown over the advent period, get out and discover somewhere fresh to go when tackle dangling becomes an option again.
