Free Website Analytics

I am often asked to recommend a free website Analytics system and so far I always recommend Google’s own Analytics system.

Yes there are other free analytics programs out there and even some costly paid for analytics solutions but none of them, in my opinion can better or even match the ability of Google Analytics.

To use Google Analytics you need to register for a free account and then tell it the url of the website you want to monitor. You are given a piece of code containing a unique number. This code is pasted into the template that your websites uses or if you are fortunate enough to be using WordPress you can just enter the unique number and it’s all done.

The home page of Google Analytics will list all the websites that you are currently tracking. You can then click on each one to analyse the information in more detail. At first glance the level of information available can seem overwhelming but the key is to not try to take it all in, in one go.

Site Usage is probably the most important factor as it is indicating how many visitors you are getting and the 30 day display allows you to see if the number of visitors is going up or down. You can also see on a map where in the world your visitors are coming from

The ‘Traffic Sources’ link allows you to see where your visitors are coming from. Are they just typing your web address into their browsers or are they coming from links on other websites, or from search engines. All useful information that allows you to start to make improvements to your site and to get even more visitors.

For any website to be a success it needs large numbers of visitors, the more you can get, the better. It is a numbers game. Analytics shows you the numbers but you need to put things in place to increase them as best as you can

There are only two ways to increase free website traffic. One is to build more pages of content which the search engines then index to allow more people to find your website. The other method of gaining free traffic is through links. Links increase your search engine positions by constantly advertising your sites presence and also guide actual visitors to you from other sites. So build great content and build links and your visitors will come.
