Eighties Television Shows: Memorable Scenes

The eighties brought all of us the very best and most detrimental in tv programming and for every series that was memorable we had several that were absurd. Occasionally the inane and the memorable were one and the same. For every excellent Television show like “Growing Pains” we had to collectively put up with ridiculous but famous fare such as “A-Team” that has now been turned into an equally ridiculous film.

1980s tv shows included some good sitcoms that stay with us to this very day. There were wonderful and revolutionary tv shows such as Taxi, which brought us the late great Andy Kaufman and introduced us to the great Danny DeVito who went on to flick popularity in movies like “Ruthless People”. “Newhart” starred Bob Newhart (duh) and was a witty, hilarious, adult humor that featured the droll humor of its sardonic star. “Cheers” brought us Woody Harrelson as well as other fantastic stars. “Roseanne” starred the big-mouthed and obnoxious Roseanne Barr (later Roseanne Arnold) who, along with tv husband John Goodman, brought a working class mindset to the genre which was valued by tv watchers from all areas of life.

So who remembers the god-awful “Alf” featuring a foul-mouthed, wise-cracking muppet-like puppet from outer space? “Nightcourt” was excellent and so was “One Day at a Time” with the very young Michael J. Fox.

One of the greatest 1980s Television shows of them all, and the most well-known sitcom was the continually number 1 “The Cosby Show” starring Mr. Jello Puddin’ himself, the truly amazing comedian Bill Cosby. The Huxtable family became part of Anericana and brought a resurgence of ratings success to the once floundering network NBC. “The Cosby Show” smashed a lot of ground in the way it treated delicate subject matter and made the way for programs such as “Seinfeld” and others that followed.

“Dallas” was a serial-like primetime soap opera that became America’s most loved addiction. The actual puzzle surrounding who shot bad guy J.R. Ewing swung the show’s ratings to completely new levels. Dallas was the 1st show of its kind and spawned the creation of a whole generation of copycats and tributes that followed including “Knots Landing”, “Dynasty” and “Falcon Crest”.

One of the most terrible 1980s Tv shows was the awful “Love Boat” which was just equaled in pure stupidity by the brain-dead “Fantasy Island”. Both of them, unsurprisingly, became number one tv shows and blew up all the ratings. Any show that featured Zsa Zsa Gabor needed to be bad. Herve Villechaise performed the small Tatoo, assistant to Ricardo Montalban’s dapper Mr. Roarke, host of Fantasy Island.

Action shows also experienced moronic writing as well as concepts. 80s Television shows such as “The A-Team”, “The Dukes of Hazzard”, and also “Knight Rider” were big on explosions not to mention have less brain cells. Because America adores mediocrity, these types of shows were destined to end up big hits and they did. There have been also a few private investigator shows like “Hill Street Blues”, “Cagney and Lacey”, “Matlock” and the top dog of all, “Magnum P.I.” starring the alluring and good looking Tom Selleck. In the end, 1980s Television shows showed clearly that you could have the very best and the worst simultaneously.
